What is Raw Banana?

Raw banana or kaccha kela is also known as plantains and belongs to banana family. They are very hard and firm cannot eat them as it is. We need to first steam or boil them to use them in making of different recipes. Raw banana is a nutrient-dense fruit that is easily available everywhere. In southern India, they are available in abundance and are mostly used in making chips, pakoras, kebabs, bhajias, kachoris, and curries.

About the Raw Banana Cutlet Recipe

This raw banana cutlet recipe is prepared by first boiling and then mashing of raw banana followed with the addition of spices and veggies. The mix is then shallow fried on an iron griddle. To make this banana cutlet without breadcrumbs I, used cornmeal for binding and ground corn flakes to coat them that give wonderful crispiness to the patties.

This low fat and guilt-free snack recipe can also be served at breakfast. They go really well with green coriander-mint chutney, or coconut chutney, or hung curd dip, or even just plain tomato ketchup. Although, these kacche kele ki tikki is made without deep frying still they taste yummy and flavourful and the top among healthy and nutritious snack time meal.

Raw banana has very low sugar content and is also little bitter in taste. But they do have a lot of health benefits. They are high in many important nutrients including Vitamin B6 and Vitamin C, and a rich source of potassium and fiber. They are also really great for heart health and bowel regularity. As they take a bit longer time to get digested, so significantly reduce the after-meal sugar level spike while giving a feeling of fullness. 

Raw Banana Cutlet Recipe-Step by Step Guide

1. Wash the raw bananas and put in a pressure cooker with water just enough to cover them. Pressure cook for up to 3-4 whistles. After the steam has escaped, take the banana out and let them cool down. Then peel them off.

2. Mash banana with the help of a potato masher, then add chopped ginger garlic paste, green chilli, also all the spices salt, red pepper, turmeric powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, dry mango powder and garam masala. Mix them well. Now add chopped onion, chopped green pepper, and grated carrots.

3. Lastly add cornmeal. First add two tbsp, mix and check the consistency. If consistency is still soft, add 1-2 tbsp more corn meal. Mix very well and make dough. Prepare round shape patties.

4. Now heat up an iron griddle or a non stick pan on low flame. Pour 1 tbsp of oil on it.

5. Coat Patties with ground corn flakes and put them on griddle. Cook for 2-3 minutes, and then turn on the other side. Pour a tiny amount of oil and let them cook for another 2- 3 minutes.

7. Tikkis are ready. Serve then warm with homemade tomato sauce or green chutney.

  1. After pressure cooking does not leave bananas long in the water.
  2. Bananas can be pressure cooked beforehand and keep refrigerated for 1-2 days. When ready, mash them and follow the steps in the recipe.
  3. Bananas should be cool down completely before start mashing.
  4. Mix all the ingredients and make patties out of it immediately otherwise, veggies start leaving water and make them soggy.
  5. To make it onion garlic free just skips them from the recipe.
  6. Coat them with ground cornflakes, if not available then use bread crumbs or fine semolina.

Ingredients
  

  • 4 medium sized Raw banana (kachhe kele)
  • ¼ cup Onion (finely chopped)
  • ¼ cup Carrot (grated)
  • ¼ cup Green pepper (finely chopped)
  • 2-3 tbsp Corn meal (makai ka atta)
  • 1-2 Green chilli (or as per your taste)
  • 1 tbsp Ginger garlic paste
  • tsp Salt (or as per your taste)
  • ½ tsp Turmeric powder (haldi)
  • ½ tsp Red chilli powder
  • 1 tsp Coriander powder (dhania powder)
  • 1 tsp Dry mango powder (amchoor)
  • ½ tsp Garam masala
  • 1 tsp Cumin powder (jeera powder)
  • 2-3 tbsp Oil (for cooking)
