Indian Style Mexican Spicy Salsa Dip / Homemade Fresh Tomato Salsa

What is salsa

Salsa is a tomato-based sauce used as a condiment mainly in Mexican American food, serve as a dip with tortillas chips or corn chips. It can be made in both raw and cooked form. Raw salsa is made fresh and consumes immediately. On the other hand, cooked salsa has a longer shelf-life and can be stored for few days in the refrigerator. It may be mild to very spicy depends upon the type of chilli used in the making of the sauce. Salsa has a tangy flavour due to the presence of tomatoes.

Mexican food taste is much similar to Indian food and I am also a big fan of Mexican food. I like a burrito in a bowl, taco, tortilla chips with salsa and Mexican bean rice dishes very much. When I was in the USA, my favourite place to eat out used to be the Qdoba Mexican grill. Their food has a spicy and tangy flavour as the Indian dishes do.

Tips and tricks

  1. Use well ripen, nice red colour tomatoes give a nice colour and juicy texture to the sauce. I have used Bombay tomatoes, while in the Mexican recipe, they use Roma tomatoes.
  2. I have added green coriander leaves as a herb but can replace it with other herbs like parsley, mint, oregano and basil as per your taste.
  3. Do not grind it to a fine paste, it tastes better when it is a little coarse and chunky.
